How to Track Leads From Google Ads Properly
A practical measurement structure for form submissions, calls, qualified leads and offline sales outcomes from Google Ads.
Tracking only a thank-you page can tell you that a form was submitted, but it does not tell you whether the enquiry was useful.
Define the first conversion correctly
Track the submission, phone call, booked meeting or other immediate action that represents genuine intent.
Capture attribution fields
UTM parameters, GCLID and landing-page information can help connect a lead with the campaign that generated it.
Track qualified outcomes when possible
If the CRM can identify qualified leads, opportunities or sales, those stages can improve reporting and platform optimisation.
Prevent duplicate events
GTM, GA4 and Google Ads configurations should be tested so one action does not fire several conversions unintentionally.
Document the measurement plan
The team should know what each conversion means, where it fires and which decisions it is designed to support.
